“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18
Support in Bereavement is an initiative of Torch Help Hub in partnership with AtaLoss.org and local churches. This initiative has developed from the work and insights of Torch and the Parish Nurse working alongside and listening to the communities across Reading.
A number of local Churches already offer support to those who have suffered loss in bereavement by running The Bereavement Journey® developed by AtaLoss. This is a seven-session series of films and discussion groups that gently guide people bereaved at any time through the most common aspects of grief and bereavement, enabling them to process the implications for themselves and discern next steps.
Usually run by churches, the course uniquely offers a seventh session on faith questions in bereavement, provided from a Christian perspective. This follows the six main sessions and is optional, making The Bereavement Journey® suitable for people of any faith or none. The course is offered in partnership with AtaLoss and for details of local courses see the Community Support Hub for details.

ReadiCook is a new collaboration between Faith Christian Group and Torch Help Hub. Our shared vision is to bring life, health, and hope to parents and adults within our Pantry network by providing practical food coaching sessions that combine cookery skills, nutritional understanding, and budgeting guidance.
Through hands-on learning, participants will gain the confidence and skills to prepare affordable, healthy meals from scratch, reduce food costs, and make informed dietary choices that support long-term health and wellbeing. At the heart of this initiative is our collective desire to see individuals and families flourish — practically, physically, and spiritually.
An initial six-week pilot course entitled “Healthy Snacks and Packed Lunches”, will start in the spring of 2026 at Southcote Family Church.

Welcome Home is an initiative of Torch Help Hub and Christian Community Action Ministries (CCA) in association with local churches across Reading. Our shared vison is to provide a welcome from the local church and Christian community to those newly arrived in a council property that has no flooring, white goods, furniture or curtains and who would otherwise struggle without support.
This project is driven by a deep awareness of the profound impact that separation can have, particularly in the context of domestic violence. For many single mothers, leaving such situations is not only an act of courage but also the beginning of an incredibly difficult journey. They are often forced to rebuild their lives from the ground up, having been placed in unfamiliar environments without the comfort of family or established support networks.
The project is motivated by the injustices these women face, and a commitment to better support those who have experienced the devastating effects of domestic violence. We believe this is exactly where Jesus would be—walking closely beside them, meeting them in their pain, listening with compassion, and lifting them up in prayer. In the midst of brokenness, He brings unwavering love, abundant grace, and deep, restoring compassion—reminding them they are seen, valued, and never alone.
Through holistic support they receive a welcome to help them set-up home and begin to recover their wellbeing as well as having someone journey with them through the myriads of decisions they have to make.
The Case Studies show pictures of transformed homes that illustrate wonderfully the physical impact our volunteers and partners can have through a few hours of hard work.
But the real gift is unseen and often unnoticed….the gift of time, presence and listening, along with timely words of encouragement, acceptance and love. Gifts that can’t be quantified, photographed or captured except in the spirit of the receiver. But like a well tendered plant, with love, support and the right environment they will grow, thrive and make a fresh start.
The transformation of a person’s environment has the potential to kick start their journey towards full restoration of body mind and soul, spurred on by a new sense of belief, dignity and self-worth. Fear, doubt and anxiety are replaced by a new hope that whispers:
“I am not alone, I am loved, I am wonderfully made and have value.”
